Fun with Vaio PCG-505fx - organiSIM.com

I have one of these machines + a load of spare parts. My dad had one from new & it has always been very sweet - I'm a fan of Sony kit ('cept SCE?), but not a fan of their prices. His was getting fairly worn and tired & we bought 2 off ebay for not a lot. Out of the 3 Vaios, we had 2 virtually perfect ones and one with all the missing/broken spare parts. Even the broken one would boot except for the fact that we're missing the interface ribbon for the HDD (that is also missing). There are still plenty of parts to fix plenty of other problems.

I managed to pick up mine for about £40 - it was bought from an insurance company as broken (via ebay) - I think the case was that it it had been covered in cola of some sort. I found that the power slider-button had become mechanically stuck because of this. A quick disassembly and rinse for many components and it was as good as new. One drawback however; the keyboard and mouse pad were buggered by varying degrees. These were both replaced, but the result is not 100% by any means - the "E" key is very quick to make a bid for freedom and the mouse pad is virtually useless :(.

There are a few problems that are easily solved - I have found that on machines that have been off for a long time, their CMOS batteries discharge and the machine will not power on. This problem is easily solved by leaving the machine plugged in for a while (a couple of hours I reckon) and then giving it a go. Ultimately if this doesn't work, try disconnecting the CMOS battery (green nr top right), but for that you'll need to take it apart.
